Melodrama is a term I’ve deliberately avoided up till now, mainly because it suggests a low-grade type of entertainment, and I didn’t want to confuse the issue by defending it. If I were to admit up front that most of what we do is melodrama, it might have seemed as if I were saying it’s okay to go for the lowest common denominator. Saying “It’s just melodrama,” is as bad as saying, “It’s only a game.” We do not deserve to be let off the hook so easily.
