In Chapter 20, I introduced an applied alternate reality game I wrote and designed called The Lost Manuscript, and gave some examples of writing for the game. There is more to the story.

Near the end of my first semester at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2010, two colleagues Ben Chang and Mei Si and I received one of three seed grants awarded that year by the university to build what I called the Emergent Reality Lab (ERL), the mixed reality space I mentioned earlier. Simultaneously, Mei and I were consultants on a second of the seed grants: a project that would teach Mandarin and Chinese culture within the ERL.
