Arthur Rock was born in upstate New York, the son of a candy store proprietor. Though he was stricken with polio as a child, his favorite pastimes today are mountain trekking and skiing. Yet there is, he says, no psychological link between the venturesomeness of trekking in Nepal and venture investing in new enterprises. Rock’s office is located in the Russ Building in San Francisco’s Financial District. The building’s elegant arched and polished marble foyer is from another, more stylish age, a distinct counterpoint to the glass-and-steel high-rises now sprouting throughout the city.
