James Anderson represents a different type of venture capitalist, one with a technical, not a financial background. And one only recently involved in the activity. A graduate of Purdue, with an advanced degree in electrical engineering, he returned to his native California and went to work with Beckman Instruments, where he was involved designing such diverse products as aerospace equipment and cardiac pacemakers. After receiving his MBA degree from Stanford in 1977, he joined the computer systems division at Hewlett-Packard, working day-to-day in line operations—at the time, a not very prestigious career path for an MBA.
