A transformation took place here between the days when heavily engineering-oriented companies like Shockley Semiconductor were typical of the place, and today, when consumer-oriented companies like Apple are more representative, in the public’s imagination, of Silicon Valley. In fact, it was that transformation, represented by the personal computer, that brought Silicon Valley to the world’s attention and stamped the place with its popular identity.
