ALLEN, MEL: BIRTH ANNIVERSARY. Feb 14, 1913. Born Melvin Allen Israel at Birmingham, AL, he began broadcasting baseball and other sporting events for the CBS radio network in 1936. He became the Yankees’ lead announcer after World War II and was nationally famous for two phrases: “How about that!” to describe a fine play and “Going, going, gone,” his home run call. After being fired by the Yankees in 1963, Allen attracted a new generation of listeners with his weekly television show “This Week in Baseball.” He died at Greenwich, CT, June 16, 1996.
