1.  INTRODUCTION

Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) are a class of CHEMFET devices (Sibbald 1983) which measure the concentrations of certain ions in an electrolyte solution1 based on the technique of potentiometry (Cattrall 1997): An equilibrium potential difference (acting as a detection mechanism) is originated at the surface of a solid material in contact with a solution whose ions can be exchanged with its surface when an equal number of ions circulate in both directions of the interface.
