The Transition of Social Protection in China
Abstract: This essay intends to examine the evolution of the social protection system in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). In doing so, the development of social protection in China is roughly divided into two stages: pre-reform (1949-1978) and post-reform (since 1978). During the pre-reform stage, China developed a dualistic collective-based social protection system which offered differential treatment to rural and urban residents through work units and rural communes.
