21st Century IT: A Roadmap
The commoditization of IT provides an opportunity for higher reliability and repeatability. The same forces that Carr identified, and that have been seen as negative by large portions of the IT community, represent a significant opportunity for IT as it evolves in the 21st century. With the migration of IT to a more reproducible model, organizations can begin to apply quality and availability standards to IT systems and processes, gaining flexibility and more appropriate levels of cost and support. I believe IT is being commoditized, but I also believe businesses need this reproducibility, that they are hungry for it.
