Now is probably the most exhilarating time in history to be a designer, but maybe not for the reasons you think.
Though recent advances in computers, fabrication, lasers, sensors, robots, and artificial intelligence seem to point to some exciting new tools coming soon for designers, this isn’t why it’s an exciting time. They’re cool tools, for sure, but there’s a much bigger design challenge ahead of us.
The reason that this is such an exciting time to be a designer is that we need to redesign everything. Yes, you read that statement correctly: Virtually everything we use, from buildings to cars to that handy little egg poacher you got from your Aunt Mildred for your birthday, needs to be redesigned. These products were designed around a set of design parameters that are simply no longer true.
