ICND1 introduced OSPF in a single area. OSPF is a link-state protocol that is highly scalable with fast convergence. One of the reasons that OSPF is so scalable is its ability to segment routing borders in OSPF using areas.
Area segmentation provides many benefits including route summarization between areas, link-state advertisements being confined to an area, and reduced overhead.
