Describing Layer 3 First-Hop Redundancy
First-hop redundancy protocols (FHRPs) consist of networking protocols that provide an active default IP gateway at all times. FHRPs use two or more routers or Layer 3 switches to transparently fail over at the first-hop IP router.
In this chapter, we will discuss the challenges presented by single default gateway configuration on end hosts, along with its solutions using Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), and Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP) as Layer 3 redundancy protocols.
