When a storage area network (SAN) is designed and built, scalability and reliability are fundamental. The Fibre Channel standards, as defined by the ANSI T11 committee, impose some limitation; for example, the maximum theoretical supported number of domain IDs is 239 per fabric or VSAN. As each Fibre Channel switch is identified by a single domain ID, this limitation also puts a theoretical upper limit on the number of switches per fabric. This directly affects the scalability of the SAN.
