10.3. Hot Standby Router Protocol
The first protocol I want to go over is HSRP. This is a Cisco-proprietary protocol that can be run on most, but not all, Cisco router and multilayer switch models. HSRP defines a standby group each of the standby groups that you define include:
Active router
Standby router
Virtual router
Any other routers that maybe attached to the subnet
The standby group will always have two routers that are participating in the group. The primary players in the group are the one active router and one standby router that communicate to each other using multicast Hello messages.
