CHAPTER 11

LAN Operations

Although an understanding of the cabling and other physical aspects is important, designing and troubleshooting networks require an understanding of what goes on at the upper part of the Network Access layer and the Internet layer of the TCP/IP model. In this chapter, topics that have already been covered to some extent are reviewed and in some cases taken to another level of detail. But the real intent of this chapter is to put all of the pieces together so you can get the big picture of how a LAN operates. Specifically, this chapter covers the following topics:

  • Understanding the routing process
  • Describing the switching process
  • Describing end-to-end communications
