Chapter 4. Local Area Networking

A Local Area Network (LAN) is any combination of networking segments that does not require the use of connections provided by a telecommunications company. There are a number of different protocols that can be used to connect multiple computers. In this chapter we will discuss a few of the most common protocols in use today. These are Ethernet, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), and Token Ring. The protocol(s) you choose for your network will depon your networking needs and the demands of the systems you want to network.
