Chapter 10. Collecting Data via Other Means

We have looked at the normal means that Network Operators use to collect data from their routers. Now let's explore some of the less used methods available to extract important and interesting information from Cisco routers.

There are various means with which to monitor Cisco routers, and this will by no means be an exhaustive list. We will, however, go over some less than obvious ways to collect useful information from your Cisco devices. The most basic and useful of the many options available to a Network Operator are automated telnet sessions, rsh and rcp, and the syslog facilities built into the Cisco IOS.
