Appendix A. Cisco IOS Software Release and Filename Conventions

For years, network engineers were frustrated trying to keep track of the plethora of Cisco IOS Software images. When ordering IOS Software, you had to choose not only the main version number, but also select an image from as many as 44 different features sets. Cisco changed this with its Cisco IOS Packaging initiative. Beginning with Cisco IOS Software Major Release 12.3M/T, Cisco simplified the IOS selection process by using a consistent naming convention and reducing the number of feature sets down to only eight.
