Since the advent of the appliance model, the installation process of Cisco Unified Communications components has been greatly simplified. All the appliance model components, including Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Cisco Unity Connection and Cisco Unified Presence Server (CUPS), all now run the same underlying operating system. This is a custom operating system specifically crafted to support the Cisco appliance models. No third-party Linux (or Windows) operating systems or application can be used with CUPS.
