Data are not the only things that must be classified. Applications and sometimes whole systems must be classified. The applications that hold and process classified information should be evaluated for the level of protection they provide. You do not want a program filled with security vulnerabilities to process and “protect” your most sensitive information. The application classifications should be based on the assurance (confidence level) the company has in the software and the type of information it can store and process.
