Motion in Non-Inertial Systems
Newton’s laws of motion apply only to an inertial frame of reference. In a non-inertial system,
the equation of motion (Newton’s second law) is modied by additional terms arising from the
non-inertial effect of the system. In this chapter, we turn to the use of non-inertial systems. By
introducing non-inertial systems, we can simplify many problems; in this sense, we gain one more
computational tool. Moreover, consideration of non-inertial systems enables us to explore some of
the conceptual difculties of classical mechanics.
