You directly influence the ways pupils behave not only in your capacity as leader, but in the role as teacher. We have defined teaching as helping pupils to learn faster and more efficiently than they would on their own (after Vargas, 1977). You need to establish and maintain your role as teacher throughout the weeks and terms of the school year, as it is upon your successful organisation and ‘performance’ in this role that your credibility with pupils will ultimately rest.
