INTRODUCTION

We have now described the components of a positive system of management. We began by considering how the physical, social and educational setting events can be arranged to promote children’s appropriate behaviour in the classroom. This was followed by discussions on managing the consequences provided for children’s behaviour. We described different types of rewards together with guidelines for their use in teaching and strengthening appropriate behaviours. Particular attention was drawn to the importance of ‘natural’ consequences in maintaining desirable behaviours once they have become established.
