In a falling market, businesses fail or cut back, stripping themselves of their most precious asset: good people who can make their business succeed. JoAnn and I saw this all around us. Early on, we considered cutting back. We could hole up until the firestorm passed. But what would we have when the sun came out? We could not put our clients first and retreat at the same time. Although many business leaders fold up their tents and steal away with no effect on those who are left behind, in some crazy way we felt our clients needed us. Our deliberations were short-lived, and we committed to adaptation and survival.
