Lagos: With 16 million people Lagos is the most rapidly growing city in the world today. Originally called Eko, it was founded by the Benin Empire around 1300 on Lagos Island (1), which remains its centre. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive and Lagos simply means ‘Lakes’ in Portuguese. The floating slum of Maloko (2) stretches out onto the surface of the lagoon. To the south Eko Atlantic (3) is planned as the Manhattan of Africa.
