Chapter 9

Caring about Kidney Disease

In This Chapter

arrow Finding out what kidney disease is

arrow Identifying foods to avoid or treat kidney disease

arrow Discovering foods that are good for your kidneys

Your kidneys, along with the rest of your excretory system (see Chapter 14 for a more in-depth discussion on the entire system), are vital to keeping your body healthy and functioning. Your kidneys have two basic jobs:

  • To assist with removing metabolic wastes from your body
  • To maintain proper amounts of water and sodium (along with other nutrients) in your blood

When your kidneys don't work properly, impurities and contaminants remain in your blood and can wreak havoc on your health. Kidney disease is a very serious condition that can result in adverse health outcomes ranging from discomfort and inconvenience to severe disability and even death.

Because your kidneys are so important, you want to do all that you can to ensure that they're well taken care of. In this chapter, I familiarize you with the kidney, examine what kidney disease is and does, and explain how a well-balanced diet can help you prevent and even treat kidney disease.
