One organ system that does not get nearly the attention it deserves is the excretory system. The amount of work this system performs for the body — and the sheer importance of its work — makes it one of the most critical body systems you have.

The kidneys, urinary bladder, ureters, and the urethra filter, process, and excrete a lion's share of whatever you put into your body (namely, your diet). Think about it: Along with the digestive system (which I cover in Chapter 11), the excretory system filters out most foreign substances (minerals, water, and so on) that you ingest either from your diet and or from other sources like medicines and pharmaceuticals. That's why maintaining a healthy, functioning excretory system should be of utmost importance to you; otherwise, you can end up facing very serious health consequences.
