Applications in the Cloud

Throughout this book, we use commonly known applications to illustrate the use and architecture of a cloud application. Most of the applications mentioned, such as Dropbox and, are Software as a Service (SaaS) applications. SaaS applications may use a backend based on the Platform as a Service (PaaS) or Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) architecture.

This chapter describes how cloud applications are built based on the different prerequisites tied to a PaaS or IaaS provider for public clouds, technologies used in a private cloud, and interoperability in a hybrid cloud environment.
