This chapter examines cloud storage with respect to four federal laws and regulations that govern industries that might benefit from the advantages offered by cloud storage providers. From a cloud storage perspective, these laws outline security measures that must be in place to protect personal information. Whether it is referred to as Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Protected Health Information (PHI), or Nonpublic personal information (NPI), the security requirements are similar. Their goals are to ensure the security, integrity, confidentiality, and availability of information.
