Time Variant Shapers

In some applications, the readout of radiation sensors requires signal processing schemes different from those allowed by linear, time invariant filters. The need of overcoming the limitations of CR-RC-like networks lead to the development of systems in which the transfer function is changed during the circuit operation. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of such “time variant” filters. First, the basic concept is presented by discussing a classical example: the reduction of ballistic deficit in large Germanium (Ge) detectors. Then, the methods to evaluate in the time domain the noise performance of time variant shapers are reviewed and Correlated Double Sampling (CDS) is discussed as a case study. ...
