Due to the single-ended nature of most radiation sensors, differential configurations are seldom used in the input stage of front-end ASICs. However, they are extensively employed in the remaining circuitry which is found on the chip. In the first part of this Appendix, the properties of basic CMOS differential cells are reviewed. In the second part, the most common architectures of operational amplifiers are discussed. Before delving into circuit details, a few fundamental definitions are revised.
