How do you regenerate a dilapidated city? Your first answer is unlikely to be “Paint the walls in bright colors,” but this is one possible response. The Indonesian slum village of Kampung Pelangi1 was run down and derelict, with its inhabitants suffering from poverty and poor health. One day a local teacher had an idea to paint their house with the brightest-color paint they could find—reds, oranges, blues, purples, greens—and celebrate the local culture with patterns and murals. In the coming days and weeks, more villagers started to paint their homes and public places in similar colors, adding new patterns.
