It has been argued that the phrase ‘Demography is destiny’ first appeared in Ben Wattenberg and Richard M. Scammon’s 1970 book The Real Majority: An Extraordinary Examination of the American Electorate in which the authors paraphrased the saying of Heraclitus (535 BC–475 BC) that ‘character is destiny’. They meant that the demographics of a population indicate which political party will prevail in that area.
