13.1. Overview of Ontology-Based Radios

This chapter discusses the role of knowledge representation (ontologies) in cognitive radio (CR). The emphasis is on those capabilities of cognitive radio that are practical and amenable to ontological treatment. After a brief introduction to ontologies, the chapter develops an ontology for CR functionality that is organized by using the same layers as communication networks.
