THE FUN OF ALTERING AN EXISTING BOOK INTO AN ART-FILLED TREASURE IS OFTEN BEST SHARED. ALTERED BOOK ROUND ROBINS ABOUND, AND SEVERAL YAHOO GROUPS EXIST SIMPLY FOR THIS PURPOSE.

Sometimes the participants work with the theme of the book being circulated, and sometimes the participants work the theme into the book regardless of the book’s content. Either way, the book structure provides a great stepping-off point for collaboration.

One dilemma that books can face when they are altered is that they become too thick. One way to address this issue is to choose a book with a sewn—rather than glued—binding and remove some pages from each signature (the sewn-in groups of pages) or remove entire signatures.
