The Cultural Context of the Israeli Social Justice Protests

Abstract

The Israeli social justice protests of the 2010s, which reached their climax in summer 2011 and faded continually until 2014, were a set of protest movements on the issues of food and housing costs and social justice in Israeli society. The movements’ deployment of social media, especially Facebook, was a constitutive element for the movements themselves as well as their perception in society, media, and politics. This chapter examines the protests as a case study for understanding social media’s role in collective action in terms of cultural contexts and framing processes.
