b25 What Is the Munsell Color Wheel?

In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton connected the two ends of his color chart, developing the first color circle. Over one hundred years later, the concept of primary colors evolved and the triadic color wheel was printed. Finding these wheels to be inadequate, Albert Munsell in 1898 created a color sphere that simultaneously shows all the properties of color: value (light/dark), hue (especially warm/cool), and intensity (bright/dull).

Rather than starting with three primary and three secondary colors, as on the traditional triadic wheel, Munsell’s color theory starts with five primaries: yellow, red, violet, blue and green. ...
