To say that humans communicate is a truism. But what exactly is “communication”?

Let me start at the beginning by considering some of the differing things that “communicating” has been taken to mean, before a look at the palette of communicating resources that we humans possess.

Like other living creatures, human beings interconnect with each other. When you come to think about it, this is actually something rather remarkable – that individual organisms do not stay separate but have active and organised ways of connecting with others outside themselves, outside of their covering skins.
