Since humans are essentially audio-visual creatures, audition is a good place to start. This is the first sense to which we become alive, the last as we die, even when we are no longer able to speak. We hear sounds in the womb, and from their first hours humans use the auditory channel to declare their existence and interact with those around them. Through sound we actively assert our presence and draw notice from others, and we formulate and learn our own identity from hearing the very sounds we ourselves make.
