2.5.2 Towards NoC
In 2006, STMicroelectronics announced details of an innovative on-chip inter-
connect technology that the company was developing to meet the increasingly
demanding needs of current and future SoC designs. The new technology,
called ST Network on Chip (STNoC), was a flexible and scalable packet-
based on-chip micronetwork designed according to a layered methodology,
that extended the STbus. The network topology was defined depending on the
application traffic, from the tree, to the simple ring and up to the patented
