stantial problems that must be weighed carefully for each application. The
first one is related to the fact that the output signal of a LED is incoher-
ent and not-directional light, in contrast to a laser. Then, problems arise due
to the collection of light. In addition, emitting diodes are usually limited by
the carrier recombination times, which also limit the operation speeds of the
source. For this reason, LED can be used for optical interconnections with
harsh demands.
