Preface
This edition of the Communication Technology Update represents a milestone of sorts. It is not notable for the edition number (the ninth) or for any particular anniversary (the first edition was published in 1992). Rather, more than any other edition, this one is routine.
What’s special is what has become routinized. As with every previous edition, almost every chapter has been completely rewritten to reflect the latest developments in the technologies discussed. The graphics have been sharpened, terms have been added to the glossary, and new chapters have been added, covering new topics that have emerged since publication of the last edition in 2002.
