Digital technologies are revolutionizing virtually all aspects of mass media. Digital audio and video transmission, interactivity, and new business opportunities are fueling an explosion in the number of mass media, and the programming they provide. Broadcast television is at the crest of the digital wave. Chapter 3 explores how broadcasters are preparing to abandon analog transmission as they are being forced to implement digital television. The chapter addresses how both the TV industry and the audience are being forced to cope with the difficult reality of converting from analog to digital transmission. Later in this section, Chapter 8 explores broadcasting's “low-definition” challenger: Internet video.
