Oppression is maintained when the weak and the strong in social relationships obscure their own ego boundaries and fuse with each other, or enter into unhealthy confluence. Playing either tyrannical or submissive roles, persons avoid defining clearly for themselves and for others what they need and want, especially as their wants might cause differences with others. They steer shy of clear definitions because the appearance of differences would mean that they would have to take responsibility for their actions, stand behind them, be vividly self-assertive, risk isolation.
