Meaning
If we are to take character seriously, as we suggested in Chapter 12, then most people would say, “Get to work.” Work seems tightly connected to the development of character.
That is why we touched on the importance of work in Chapter 4, on the Rising Generation. Here we want to expand those comments to situate work within the development of character, for individuals and for a family.
Many people today say that work should aim at “meaning.” Our goal should be to do meaningful work. Meaning might sound like a luxury. If you don't have to work to make ends meet or feed and clothe your children, then you can indulge in pursuing meaning.
