I’ve got an uncle who records sound for motion pictures. His technical title is Production Sound Mixer. He’s basically the guy who makes sure you can hear what’s going on as you munch on popcorn at the theater. I’m told the job requires an expert sense of acoustics, highly specialized technical knowledge, and really expensive equipment. On the set, or on location, he has the luxury of shutting out a lot of the mayhem going on around him and devoting all of his attention to things like microphone placement and real-time mixing.
