Once you can write convincing drum tracks, nicely patterned basslines, and beautiful melodic leads, you are a large part of the way there in your endeavors to compose and produce your own music. The next area to consider is how to bring life, vitality, and expressive power to the sounds you use. Computer musicians often take a long time to realize that the sounds they select for use in their compositions are often simply raw material, rather than a shaped and finished product. Selecting a synth patch, they play it on the keyboard and find that it sounds lifeless and artificial. Expecting an already shaped and finished product, they are often disheartened.
