Chapter 19. Mixing and Mastering

Mixing and mastering are quite separate jobs. The concern of mixing is getting the levels of individual tracks just right, securing an appropriate place for them within the stereo field, and applying EQ diagnostically to create an absolutely clear sound. The concern of mastering is creating a high-quality master recording suitable for use within particular environments, such as television, radio, commercially released CDs, and so on.

In a professional recording studio, the processes of mixing and mastering are done by separate professional people. The producer mixes the track, and the mastering engineer masters it. Computer musicians, however, are probably working from their home studios on an extremely tight budget. ...
