In this chapter, you will learn how to

• Describe the workings of keyboards

• Explain how to connect and use mice and other pointing devices

• Describe how to work with monitors

The standard computer uses two types of input devices and one output device. A keyboard and a mouse enable you to give commands to the computer. A monitor enables the computer to show you the results of those commands. Figure 3-1 shows the parts of a simple PC.

These three devices have been the mainstay of input/output (I/O) since the very early days of personal computers. Because they offer users amazing versatility in working with the PC, they don’t look to go away any time soon.
