10.2 Modelling fatigue of bulk cement
Before the more complex failure processes occurring within the composite
structure of a cemented joint replacement can be modelled, relevant dam-
age mechanisms and contributory factors for isolated bone cement must
be considered. In the case of bone cement, this requires recognition of the
distributed nature of damage, the role of pores in initiating micro-cracks,
the simultaneous occurrence of creep deformation and the potential for
residual stresses to initiate micro-cracks prior to loading the cement.
